Pearl on Coinbase's Roadmap: What It Means, and Why PRL Is Now PEARL
Pearl Coinbase listing news, explained: a roadmap entry is not trading. What it means, why PRL is now PEARL, and the supply math.
Pearl in four numbers
| Measure | Figure | When |
|---|---|---|
| Price, about 00:30 Dubai time | $2.32 | 22 Oct |
| Share of the 2.1 billion maximum supply in circulation (our calculation) | About 17% | 22 Oct |
| Network fees, last 30 days | About $945 | 30 days, read 22 Oct |
| All-time high | $2.46 | 21 Oct |
On 19 October the official listings account of Coinbase, the US crypto exchange, posted on X, the social network: "Assets added to the roadmap today: Axis Labs (AXIS), Pearl (PEARL), and Stable (STABLE)" (Coinbase listings post on X). Pearl's price rose in the days after. Here is what the announcement does and does not mean.
A roadmap is not a listing
Coinbase says its roadmap lists assets "we have decided to list", but adds that "trading for assets will only be launched once there is market-making support and sufficient technical infrastructure in place", with a separate announcement when trading starts (Coinbase listing blog). Coinbase also warns that sending an asset to your account before an official launch "may lead to permanent loss of funds" (same page).
Coverage of the 19 October post made the same point: no trading date was given, as Crypto Briefing, a crypto news site, noted (Crypto Briefing). EconoTimes, a business news site, noted on 20 October that Coinbase's roadmap page listed AXIS but not Pearl (EconoTimes). When we read that page on 22 October it showed Ritual and Axis Robotics under its roadmap headings and still did not name Pearl (Coinbase listing blog). That could simply mean the page lags the X account, but it is worth knowing.
PRL or PEARL?
Pearl's coin has traded as PRL on smaller exchanges since launch, according to the market list on CoinGecko, a crypto price-tracking site (CoinGecko markets list). Coinbase used PEARL in its post (Coinbase listings post), and Crypto Briefing describes the token as "PEARL, which also goes by PRL" (Crypto Briefing). An independent Pearl timeline site records the Coinbase addition under the PEARL name (learnpearl.org timeline). Searchers should know both tickers refer to the same coin, and that other unrelated tokens also use "PRL".
What Pearl is
Pearl is its own blockchain that started on 27 April 2026 (Crypto Briefing). Instead of the pointless puzzles Bitcoin miners solve, Pearl miners use graphics chips to do matrix multiplication, the core arithmetic of AI models. The idea, called proof of useful work, comes from a 2025 research paper by Pearl's co-founders, posted on arXiv, the open archive of research papers (arXiv 2504.09971). The company behind it, Pearl Research Labs, also runs a paid AI service (pearlresearch.ai).
There is a catch that matters for anyone reading "AI mining" headlines. EconoTimes reported that a June preprint documented a mining pool accepting work generated from random inputs, and that block rewards alone do not show paying AI customers (EconoTimes). Our research desk read Pearl's open code and whitepaper and reached the same view: the chain checks that a multiplication was done correctly, not that anyone needed the answer (the code is public on GitHub, the code-hosting site: Pearl code on GitHub). For a different attempt to tie a token to AI demand, see our explainer on Orbio's AI agent launchpad.
The supply math
At about 00:30 Dubai time (UTC+4) on 22 October, CoinGecko showed Pearl at $2.32, about 353 million coins in circulation, a maximum supply of 2.1 billion, and an all-time high of $2.46 set on 21 October (CoinGecko). The circulating figure is about 17% of the maximum.
Pearl has no pre-mine; every coin comes from mining. Our research desk read the reward formula in the public code and found no halvings: rewards shrink smoothly, with half of all 2.1 billion coins mined after about four years at the target pace (Pearl code on GitHub). Their arithmetic from that formula puts current issuance at roughly 1 million new coins a day. At $2.32, that is about $2.4 million of new coins a day that miners can sell, and supply would grow by close to 90% over the next year if blocks keep their recent pace.
Against that, the network's transaction fees are tiny. DefiLlama, a public dashboard of crypto fees and revenue, shows about $945 of fees over the last 30 days (DefiLlama API, Pearl). We used the same dashboard in our check of StonkFun's revenue claim. Pearl's own whitepaper says the coin's value "is completely dependent on the expectation of its future adoption as a means of payment" (Pearl whitepaper).
What would change the picture
- A dated trading announcement from Coinbase. Until then the roadmap is an intention, and Coinbase's own terms say assets can be delayed.
- Evidence of paying AI customers whose work is done by Pearl miners, published with figures.
- How miners behave. With about a million new coins a day, the price depends on buyers absorbing that flow.
What we couldn't confirm
- That BitGo, a crypto custody firm, now holds Pearl for clients. Several accounts on X said so, but BitGo had not confirmed it when we checked.
- Why Coinbase's roadmap page did not show Pearl on 22 October. We do not know whether this is a delay in updating the page or a change of plan.
- How much of the early supply the team mined. Pearl's launch started at the lowest difficulty, and the amount mined by insiders is not disclosed.
- The issuance and supply-growth figures are our research desk's arithmetic from the public code and recent block times, not figures published by Pearl.
Not financial advice. A roadmap listing is not a guarantee of trading. Do your own research before buying or selling anything.
